PORCH SENSES: Episode 8

Definitely quieter highway noise on a Saturday morning. You can pick out the individual trucks a bit more. It is broken up by 3 long blasts from a train in the distance. The birds that were so quiet a minute ago have now all started chattering at once. It is quite the production adding to that the sound of quick wings flapping. The birds are happy. I don’t need to ask why, just contented with the outcome. The air is so still until I wrote that sentence, now the flag moves slightly. The daily ritual of my neighbour walking his older dog Chief, usually end with the dog getting carried home. He is happy to be outside nonetheless. You don’t ask why, you are just contented with the outcome.

PORCH SENSES: Episode 7

This is the earliest I have been out on my porch so far since writing. I see flurries falling in one streetlight but not the other. Very localized system. The hum of the highway is predominant this morning, not a sound from a bird anywhere. The air is still but still a city smell to it. A crash of late melting ice falls to the side of the porch. The couch is alone no more on the boulevard today… but it shall join it’s friends in the truck. It would have made a great penalty box for street hockey.
A Toronto Star gets hand delivered to the retired couple next door…seems like a dying trade to hold a tangible newspaper . But some of us hang on to these habits like comfort food. A neighbour puts on his good slippers, visits his garage and adds to his collection of recycling and garbage on the curb as if THIS was the last one. There will be another truck, I can smell it.

PORCH SENSES: Episode 22

There is frost on the ground but seems warmer without the cold breeze. Bright blue sky is a welcomed backdrop for even barren looking trees. Birds are chattering all around and seem happy as well. It is the day before Christmas and I still haven’t put the traditional white lights around the railings. Will anyone notice? I did place a red flood light on the front lawn to symbolize my support for this money driven Christian holiday. I guess I was putting family first this year.
As the sun gets higher it makes a warm red glow across the houses, trees and the circle t steeple is brilliantly lit up. 2 squirrels have jumped onto the bird feeder and caused enough commotion to make the 4 doves fly up out of harms way. There is a family unit. Rare do you see one without the other. No fanfare, just loyalty. They have to stay frosty, but they do it together.
