The air is cold but I only feel the chill when the air is moving around. A chickadee breaks the silence. It sounds happy. Snow is covering everything, there is less to land on and yet the birds remain contented. Maybe it is the warm glow in the sky this morning. The sunrise has given a pink hue to the sky. The East facing homes, the trees, and especially the steeple, even a tv antenna are all reflecting the fiery glow. Magic that is enough to put a skip in a step or an extra whistle in your bird call. Enjoy the day.

PORCH SENSES: Episode 14

The full moon from last night is still hanging up in the sky this morning. A stark contrast against the cold blue sky. Is it affecting the tides in the oceans right now? Yes. Teachers will tell you it affects the children as well. ALL the teachers tell me this in fact. Is it reasoning to explain a cause? Is it so anticipated that it itself causes behaviors to be off? It is a 30 day cycle so chances are the classroom will have a worse day than normal at some point. I am not a scientist but it is difficult to not believe in this monthly behaviour when all teachers speak of it, schools and daycares. Is it the pull that affects mood and behaviours? It would certainly give some solid ground to horoscopes. They always seem too vague to be believable. Knowledge of the horoscope seems to be the forced reasoning behind mood or behaviour and not realistic cause and effect. Humans have always made up magically reasons for the unexplainable over time. It is the reason we have so many gods. The moon has no idea how much power it welds on the humans.
It does look pretty up in the sky though.

The moon has all but disappeared in the skies to west as the sunshine becomes brighter in the East. The edges of the sphere have become undefined and now streams of clouds are visible across the front of the moon. We wouldn’t know if anything was happening across the backside. The moon knows what it did here and moves on to wreck havoc in other cultures now. It did occur to be that the circle t steeple and moon beside each other looked a lot like a baseball and bat. On top of ALL that, it is Friday the 13th… have a great day!

PORCH SENSES: Episode 12

On my porch and very quiet. Just the highway noise but the birds are quiet. Now that I have written that, they are very loud and excited.
I can see the line of clouds over Port and Welland… just blue skies here. The wind is chilly when it passes through. They are getting lake effect snow, we are getting magic snow. Little tiny flakes are falling slowly but so few of them you can count them. Where do they come from if not a cloud?

PORCH SENSES: Episode 10

Christmas lights have appeared on various homes on my street now… and I am sitting on my porch without a jacket. All different styles of displays, the vintage white lights, the subtle, and the modern display including a blow up Santa. Santa looks great when the air is on but during the day he just looks like another old man the morning after a bender. More of the opposite feel than what the Christmas decoration magic is trying to capture. I have yet to put my garland and lights up and today seems like a warm enough day to get that started.
A seagull flies by with it’s usual call, as if by an ocean or lake…or McDonalds. Alas it is the canal and lake boats behind my home that attracts them. The rest of the birds have started their conversations… talking over each as if their story is more important than the others. Maybe it is just a collective joy… best Christmas display ever.
