PORCH SENSES: Episode 10

Christmas lights have appeared on various homes on my street now… and I am sitting on my porch without a jacket. All different styles of displays, the vintage white lights, the subtle, and the modern display including a blow up Santa. Santa looks great when the air is on but during the day he just looks like another old man the morning after a bender. More of the opposite feel than what the Christmas decoration magic is trying to capture. I have yet to put my garland and lights up and today seems like a warm enough day to get that started.
A seagull flies by with it’s usual call, as if by an ocean or lake…or McDonalds. Alas it is the canal and lake boats behind my home that attracts them. The rest of the birds have started their conversations… talking over each as if their story is more important than the others. Maybe it is just a collective joy… best Christmas display ever.

PORCH SENSES: Episode 8

Definitely quieter highway noise on a Saturday morning. You can pick out the individual trucks a bit more. It is broken up by 3 long blasts from a train in the distance. The birds that were so quiet a minute ago have now all started chattering at once. It is quite the production adding to that the sound of quick wings flapping. The birds are happy. I don’t need to ask why, just contented with the outcome. The air is so still until I wrote that sentence, now the flag moves slightly. The daily ritual of my neighbour walking his older dog Chief, usually end with the dog getting carried home. He is happy to be outside nonetheless. You don’t ask why, you are just contented with the outcome.

PORCH SENSES: Episode 4

The density has come back to the neighbourhood with the ice and snow frozen to all the tree branches the sound of shoveling in the distance while birds sing their songs all around me. One bird even joined me in the porch. As the sun comes up it highlights the circle t steeple and the tops of the oldest trees. Smoke is seen bellowing out of a chimney from a snow covered rooftop just like a Christmas card. There isn’t any wind today, the flag is still, almost frozen in place. It IS frozen in place. A car drives slowly by crunching the snow and ice under it’s weight. Where do the birds land in the trees? They must not mind the snow on their feet. In fact they seem to knock a little snow off the branches every time they land. If you notice a branch with perfect snow frozen to it then a section out of place and missing snow… that was a bird. Branch out and leave your mark.

PORCH SENSES: Episode 3

The freezing rain has begun. I can hear my flag crack everytime the wind pushes it…St Andrew is frozen. A neighbour has left her car running for 10 minutes to thaw. She left the radio on tuned loudly to talk radio. The words are not understandable, very muffled. The birds are singing but I cannot see them. They must be in the evergreens… and not a fan of talk radio I presume. There was a sudden drop in temperature then back again. Now I see the icicles have formed on the branches.
